(This is bit formal isn’t it?…)
Did you used to look like Hoggle from Labyrinth before you got into raw foods?
Yes. Ok, maybe not quite as bad as Hoggle (sorry, Hoggle), but I did suffer from painful adult acne, anxiety, fatigue, mood swings and severe scattiness. I was also bloated a lot of the time. I tried everything for my acne – long courses of harsh anti-biotics, the contraceptive pill, ‘miracle’ creams and potions; I became a fitness freak, gave up alcohol, gave up coffee, I even resorted to having a chemical face peel – but nothing really seemed to work for very long. Not really. The spots always came back. It wasn’t until I discovered the incredible healing powers of raw foods that I got true glowing skin for the first time in my life; and felt happier, more energetic and more clear headed than I think I ever had.
How did you first get introduced to raw foods?
Chloe Howman. I blame her. She is a good friend and co-worker in a BBC drama we starred in together called ‘Holby Blue’ (you will see a picture of me here before I got rawcous, too). Chloe, as an advanced yogi and lover of all things organic, always looks amazing. But this particular time back in 2010, she was looking smoking. I asked her what she had been doing to make her skin so bright and eyes so white. Her answer was:
“Wellll, I’ve become a vegan….
I mainly eat…
I think she was expecting me to gawp at her in bemused bewilderment, but as soon as I heard the words ‘raw foods’, something clicked in me. This was the answer I had been looking for, I just knew it! From that moment on, and after a delicious raw meal served with this amazingly crazy dehydrated ‘raw onion bread‘ stuff made by Chloe, I dove head first into every single raw food book I could get my hands on. I trawled the internet for raw recipes and research, and bought my very own beloved Excalibur dehydrator just two months later.
My raw food quest had begun.
So this raw food stuff is just about looking good? That’s a bit vain isn’t it?
While it is true that some of the many benefits of eating high raw diet are clear skin, youthful radiance, glossy hair and sparkling eyes, it wasn’t actually the lure of these things that got me hooked; it was the way it made me feel. I had done detox’s before – cut out salt, no wheat, no meat, no alcohol, weigh this, weigh that, blah blah blah, – but I’d always feel miserable and deprived. So before I embarked on Shazzie’s three day 100% raw food detox from ‘Detox Your World’, I was excited but apprehensive at the same time. But, oh my god! I felt amazing! There was some of the usual unpleasant detox symptoms, physical and emotional, but I just could believe how happy and alive I felt. And the food tasted GOOD!!! I didn’t feel I was missing out on anything, in fact, I couldn’t get enough of this juicy living cuisine. A whole world of new food was opening up to me, and a new way of living too. It was a very exciting feeling, and one that lead me to eventually train to become a certified raw food chef, and run my own website where I can share my love of all things raw with you.
Never saw any of this coming!
