Two Weeks on Raw – Day Nine


I think it is safe to say that today was a far better day than yesterday. We didn’t go to the gym this morning, and Jack feels much better for it. I think doing exercise on top of all the raw food is maybe too much for him at this early stage. No more gym trips, then. Well, my pass had run out anyway… It was nice while it lasted. Anyway! Back to the raw food.

After being woken up at 4 am this morning by a drunk couple arguing outside the house, I decided to make the most of my frustrated wide awake state and head down to the kitchen. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you’re trying to make yourself so knackered and worn out that you’re able to sleep through incoherent loud mouthed ranting…I re-arranged the kitchen, put a tray of Raw Chocolate Macaroons in the dehydrator, prepared Jack and Sally’s breakfast and also came up with these new little beauties –  Mini Raw Chocolate Tiffin Slices. It’s because of these Mini Raw Chocolate Tiffin Slices that I am now glad of the fact that I am not in possession of a Vita-Mix. Had it not have been for my bog standard £25 blender, these moorish slices of tea time goodness may never have been created. You see, when I make my Almond Milk in said £25 quid blender, the almonds don’t really blend very well. At all. A few do, and the others just whizz around shouting at the blades “You can’t catch me! You can’t catch me!”. So what I’m left with is a kind of chunky almond pulp mush. I normally dehydrate this* and leave it sat in a tupperwear doing nothing for weeks. But at 4.30am this morning, I saw the chunky dehydrated almond pulp through new, half closed eyes. I thought “Hang on a little second…that chunky dehydrated almond pulp looks cannily like…biscotti!” And it didn’t stop there. From then I started thinking “Hmmm, maybe if I pour chocolate all over it, it will taste like a chocolate biscuit type thing… and if I add some pistachios, chopped brazils, a few raisins and gojis, it might resemble something close to….TIFFIN!!!” Which it absolutely does – WIN!  Here’s the recipe –

Mini Raw Chocolate Tiffin Slices
Tea Time Treat
  • 3 cups of chunky dehydrated almond pulp
  • 1½ of liquid chocolate**
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • ¼ cup agave or maple syrup
  • ½ cup pistachios
  • ½ cup cashews
  • ¼ cup chopped Brazil nuts
  • ½ raisins
  • ¼ goji berries
  • pinch salt
  1. Put everything in a bowl and give a good stir to make sure it's all coated in chocolate.
  2. Spoon mixture out into a large rectangular glass dish, about 1 inch thick.
  3. Leave to set in the fridge for a few hours.
  4. When set use a sharp knife to cut into small squares, or how ever big you fancy.
  5. Using either palette knife or metal frying spatular, lift the squares out of the tray.
  6. Enjoy with your favourite cuppa mid afternoon!


Sally – “I feel great today. I loved my lunch of onion bread topped with avocado. Simple and delicious. And I love the scones you made in the dehydrator. In fact someone at work today said “Oi! You’re not allowed to eat that! And is that cream in the middle?” And I said, “I think you’ll find I am, and no it’s not cream; it’s coconut butter thank you very much”. My cravings have definitely subsided, although I am still looking forward to having an egg. Don’t want meat at all though. My friend told me tonight that for her dinner she had turkey fillet with mash, fried mushrooms and tomatoes and I have to say, I thought it sounded revolting! I was very happy with my raw meals today”

Jack – “I feel so much better today from not going to the gym. I feel like I have had more time to reflect on the changes to my diet and I have to say I feel very positive. I haven’t eaten much today, but have still had a great amount of energy, and that is a wonderful feeling. I can’t say I have experienced the crazy raw buzz that you talk about, but maybe that is because it’s early days. I don’t know whether I would want to stick with this 100% though to find out. I just miss meat too much. I’m not craving ‘bad’ foods today though, which is good. I would just love a fillet steak with new potatoes… and a salad, too! Salad and meat, that will do me. I do feel really good on raw food today, though… ” 

* Yes, I have a dehydrator. I find you’re either a Vita-Mix person or a Dehydrator person. One day I’ll be a fancy pants and have both.

** Here’s how to make the liquid chocolate. Just omit the orange oil (or leave it in, that might be quite nice actually!)-
